Returning to racing with an exceptional victory in the Group 3 San Domenico Stakes (1100m) at Rosehill Gardens last weekend, co-trainer Michael Hawkes has confirmed exciting three-year-old Nostradamus will enter the Group 3 The Run To The Rose (1200m) on August 30th as the last point of call before the Group 1 Golden Rose Stakes (1400m).
Jumping from the gates well in the San Domenico Stakes, jockey James McDonald settled Nostradamus on the heels of the early leaders Sheer Style and Wandjina, finding a clear line upon reaching the final straight and charging home to beat Washington Heights by close to a length.
Pleased with the Medaglia D’Oro’s first-up performance in the San Domenico Stakes, Hawkes said he was relieved the see a more polished run than that exhibited in a Hawkesbury barrier trial just days earlier.
“We think he’s a pretty smart horse. This race probably taught him a bit,” Hawkes said after the San Domenico Stakes.
“He jumped well but then relaxed just off the speed and really hit the line solid.
“To come here today and beat a good field shows us he is on the right path.
“He only just won his trial but that’s him, he’s a lazy colt, but he has a motor and knows when to use it. Put him in a race and he’s all determination.
“He is only going to get better as he gets over a little further and we will head to the Golden Rose now.”
Unable to string together much of a consistent run of form over his maiden racing preparation through the 2014 Autumn Carnival, winning the Nursery Plate (1100m) on debut before finishing fourth in the Group 3 Blue Diamond Prelude (1100m) and seventh in the Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m).
Likely to line up against a similarly talented field in the 2014 Run To The Rose as that which he faced in the San Domenico Stakes, Nostradamus will be confirmed in the final field for the August 30th Group 3 by Wednesday, August 27th.
