One of the most anticipated start-of-season races will take place at Rosehill this Saturday, August 27, with The Run To The Rose 2011 running as a crucial preparatory event for three-year-olds heading towards the $1 million Group 1 Golden Rose (1400m) next month during the Sydney Spring Racing Carnival.
This year the $125,000 Group 3 The Run To The Rose (1200m) attracted a small but imposing field of eight horses, all keen to stake their 2011 Golden Rose claims with a win or at least strong performance.
Mashkoor is a $151 roughie in the Luxbet The Run To The Rose odds so why not put a dollar on them just in case to really clean up this spring!
Australia’s leading online bookmaker currently have Anthony Cummings’ explosive Fastnet Rock colt Smart Missile at the top of their Golden Rose odds, Luxbet paying $3.50 for them in the futures markets.
Smart Missile, to date the only horse to defeat Golden Slipper winner Sepoy, had their juvenile campaign cut short and as such remains an untapped and uncapped danger leading to the major spring showdowns.
On Saturday they will be ridden by ace hoop Glen Boss from barrier eight, Smart Missile odds-on favourite paying $1.80 to maintain their flawless career record that sits at two wins from two starts so far.
The only two The Run To The Rose runners considered as genuine threats to Smart Missile are Peter Snowden’s dual Group 1 winner Helmet and John O’Shea’s progressive colt Foxwedge, the pair sitting as equal $3.80 second elects at Luxbet.
Helmet is the highest-rated of The Run To The Rose hopefuls and as such will carry the top-weight on Saturday, Kerrin McEvoy to ride them at 59kg from an ideal barrier three draw.
The son of Exceed And Excel has already won twice at elite level with victories in the AJC Inglis Sires’ Produce Stakes and Champagne Stakes as a two-year-old, and on Saturday will make their new season debut.
Helmet is more likely to be at their best when they step up in distance a little later for races including Melbourne’s 2011 Caulfield Guineas in October, but Snowden hopes their class will see them upset Smart Missile on Saturday.
Meanwhile Foxwedge is not without their The Run To The Rose claims after their impressive first-up win in the Group 3 San Domenico Stakes (1100m) at Rosehill on August 13.
Due to be ridden by Corey Brown, who replaces the suspended Nash Rawiller, on Saturday Foxwedge has the inside running with barrier one and there has been plenty of early money come in for the colt at Luxbet.
The next best-priced horse in the field is also the sole filly to contest the 2011 The Run To The Rose, Karuta Queen.
Neville Layt’s Magic Millions winner is paying $10 through Luxbet to upset the boys and improve on her first-up third to Foxwedge in the San Domenico.
Rounding out The Run To The Rose field are Scott Aspery’s $201 Cox Plate 2011 long-shot Flight Of Pegasus ($21), the Nathan Tinkler-owned Boys On Tour ($35), The Rosebud fourth placegetter Diamond To Pegasus ($61) and Jason Coyle’s lightly-raced Elusive Quality colt Mashkoor who is the $151 roughie at Luxbet – worth putting a dollar bet on just in case!
The Rydges Parramatta Run To The Rose is scheduled to run as Rosehill Race 5 on Saturday, jump time 2:45pm (local).
